I have always been concerned when an organization says that they want all their Board members involved directly in asking for money. Not everyone is good at it and not everyone genuinely wants to do it. Everyone has their strengths and the Board should be well rounded. Folks that are not good at asking could certainly make a "thank you" phone call or take a donor to lunch to bring them up to date on the organization's current projects. Then the Board member with the "ask" strength could follow-up at a later time, maybe with the "thank you" Board member along for the ride. Lots of ways to engage folks in the process without having to actually make the "ask." Frankly, there are only a small percentage of individuals that are good at this anyway, and fewer still who qualify the process as enjoyable! Gail is right on target with this post .... friendraising is the key!
